Shreyas Iyer has made a strong comeback to the Indian cricket team. He is playing against England in the first ODI at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. While chasing a target of 249 runs, he smashed a quick half-century in just 30 balls.
India was in trouble after losing both openers early. Yashasvi Jaiswal managed only 15 runs, while captain Rohit Sharma got out for just two.
Shreyas Iyer’s Return After a Tough Phase
Before this match, Shreyas Iyer last played for India during the Sri Lanka tour in August 2024. He struggled in that series, scoring only 38 runs in three ODIs. However, he retained his place in the squad for the ongoing ODI series against England and the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Iyer’s strong performances in domestic cricket helped him return to the national team. He led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL 2024 title and also guided Mumbai to victories in the Ranji Trophy 2023-24, Irani Cup, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25.
Speaking about his journey, Iyer shared how he overcame setbacks with self-belief. He called himself a “champion” and said that his time away from international cricket taught him valuable lessons.
He said in a video posted by BCCI, “I feel this gap from international cricket has given me a lot of learnings. I don’t run behind success; I follow a routine and preparation, which will take me towards success. For me, a champion is… me. It is all in the mind. I personally feel there is no one to support you other than yourself. Keep elevating yourself, transforming yourself from one level to another, and you will never cry over spilt milk.”
Success Comes With Consistency
Iyer also spoke about the importance of staying in the present and learning from both wins and losses. He said he was grateful for all the championships he won in 2024.
The Punjab Kings (PBSK) skipper stressed the need for humility and gratitude. He added, “If you run behind something, you’ll definitely get it, but there’s a journey towards it; it’s not that you get it overnight.”
Shreyas also expressed his excitement about returning to the Indian team. He said his focus is only on the ODI series right now. Wearing the national jersey again, he promised to give his best in every match for India.
