Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) could soon expand its presence beyond the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Women’s Premier League (WPL) by investing in an SA20 franchise. If this happens, RCB will join the list of IPL teams that have ventured into overseas T20 leagues.
RCB to SA20? Allan Donald Hints at Expansion
Former South African pacer and SA20 ambassador Allan Donald has hinted at the possibility of two new teams joining the South African T20 league before the next season. In a virtual media interaction, he mentioned seeing a social media post suggesting a potential new team named Royal Challengers Bloemfontein.
“You know, there’s a little rumour going around at the moment. I saw it on Instagram again this morning; could there be two more franchises added? So there was a little guy with a poster of Royal Challengers Bloemfontein. So who knows? I mean, we’ll see what pops up at the end of the year,” Donald said.
RCB Among the Few IPL Teams Yet to Expand
Most IPL franchises have already invested in overseas leagues. However, RCB, Punjab Kings, and Gujarat Titans remain the only three IPL teams yet to enter any foreign T20 tournament.
Several IPL franchises have expanded their reach globally. Mumbai Indians (MI) own teams in multiple leagues, including MI Cape Town (SA20), MI New York (MLC), MI Emirates (ILT20), and Oval Invincibles (The Hundred). Chennai Super Kings (CSK) also own Joburg Super Kings (SA20) and Texas Super Kings (MLC).
In contrast, RCB has focused solely on its IPL and WPL teams. However, with SA20 looking to expand, there is a possibility that RCB might finally take the leap into overseas franchise cricket. If the speculation turns out to be true, Royal Challengers Bloemfontein could soon be a reality.
