Sony has announced a five-day extension for all PlayStation Plus users following a major outage that left gamers unable to access the PlayStation Network (PSN) for nearly 18 hours. The outage disrupted online gameplay and sign-ins, affecting thousands of users worldwide.
According to a report by The Indian Express, Sony confirmed on Sunday that all active PlayStation Plus subscribers would automatically receive the additional service days. The global outage, which began late on Friday and continued through Saturday, caused significant disruption for users attempting to sign in or play online games.
Sony Acknowledges Issue, Offers Compensation to PlayStation Plus Users
Sony issued an official statement on X (formerly Twitter) acknowledging the issue and confirming the restoration of network services. “Network services have fully recovered from an operational issue. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank the community for their patience,” the company stated. However, Sony did not disclose the exact cause of the outage.
The downtime impacted users across multiple regions, with reports from Downdetector.com indicating that approximately 7,939 users in the U.S. and around 7,336 users in the UK faced issues at the outage’s peak. Many players took to social media platforms to voice their frustrations over the prolonged disruption.
By Saturday evening, Sony confirmed that the PlayStation Network was fully operational again. The PlayStation Network is a vital component of Sony’s gaming division, supporting millions of players worldwide through online multiplayer access, digital game purchases, and other subscription-based services.
This incident is not the first major disruption Sony has faced. In 2014, a cyberattack forced PSN offline for several days during the holiday season. A more severe breach occurred in 2011 when hackers compromised personal data from nearly 77 million users, resulting in a month-long service outage and a regulatory investigation.
Despite the inconvenience, many PlayStation users appreciated the five-day compensation, recognizing Sony’s effort to address the disruption. “PlayStation is back up again after being down for a whole day. Sony at least saved millions of gamers their Sunday right after ruining their Saturday,” one user posted on X.
Sony has reassured its users that network services are now fully functional and encourages players to reach out to customer support if they continue to experience connectivity issues.
With this outage now resolved, PlayStation Plus members can expect their five-day free service extension to be automatically applied to their accounts in the coming days.
