Empowering Women in Gaming: Bridging the Gender Gap Through Mentorship and Opportunity

India’s gaming industry has introduced the first-ever Mabel Addis Women in Games Month, an initiative focused on recognizing and supporting women in the gaming workforce. Despite women comprising 44% of India’s gaming community, their representation in development, leadership, and innovation roles remains disproportionately low. The initiative aims to address this gender gap by providing mentorship, resources, and opportunities to women pursuing careers in gaming.

Named after Mabel Addis, the creator of The Sumerian Game in 1964, the initiative honors her role as one of the first female game designers. Addis’s game, often regarded as one of the earliest narrative-driven video games, played a crucial role in shaping interactive storytelling in gaming. However, despite her contributions, her work remained largely unrecognized for decades. By dedicating this initiative to her, the Indian gaming industry seeks to celebrate women’s contributions while paving the way for a more inclusive future.

Spearheaded by the M-League Foundation, the month-long initiative will feature workshops, panel discussions, and networking events designed to empower women in gaming. These programs will provide guidance, skill-building opportunities, and industry connections to help more women thrive in an industry that remains male-dominated. The initiative will also spotlight several women who have made significant strides in India’s gaming sector, sharing their stories to inspire others.

Among the industry leaders being recognized are Salone Sehgal, the Founding General Partner of Lumikai, who has played a key role in supporting innovative gaming startups. Other prominent figures include Namratha Swamy of MPL, Laxmi Khanolkar of Apar Games, Archana Mankar of JetSynthesys’ Nautilus Mobile, and Parul Tyagi of Google, each of whom has contributed to shaping India’s gaming landscape. By highlighting their achievements, the initiative hopes to encourage more women to consider gaming as a viable and rewarding career path.

As India’s gaming sector continues to expand, the Mabel Addis Women in Games Month serves as a step toward fostering greater inclusivity in the industry. By offering structured support, mentorship, and exposure, the initiative aims to bridge the gender gap and ensure that more women can contribute to and benefit from the gaming industry’s growth.
