Telangana police conducted a late-night raid on a farmhouse in Moinabad, uncovering an illegal casino and cockfighting operation. The operation led to the arrest of 64 individuals involved in high-stakes gambling and animal cruelty.
According to a report by India Today, the Special Operations Team (SOT), along with Rajendranagar and Moinabad police, carried out the raid in Rangareddy district. Authorities seized over Rs 30 lakh in cash, 55 luxury vehicles, 86 roosters used for cockfights, 46 cockfight knives, and poker chips. The farmhouse had been converted into a large-scale gambling den.
Among the arrested individuals, 10 belong to Telangana, while the rest are from Andhra Pradesh. Police suspect the involvement of a well-organized syndicate operating behind the scenes. Investigations are ongoing to identify the masterminds and uncover the full extent of the illegal activities. Officials believe that the suspects had been running the gambling setup for a significant period, attracting high-profile bettors from multiple regions.
The authorities have registered a case under the Telangana Gaming Act and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act at Moinabad Police Station. Further action is expected as officials probe the scale of the illegal operation and potential links to organized crime. Police are also investigating whether similar operations exist in other parts of the state.
Illegal Cockfighting and High-Stakes Betting: A Persistent Challenge
This crackdown comes amid rising concerns over the prevalence of cockfighting in the region. During Sankranti, cockfighting events continue to draw large crowds despite a legal ban. Across Andhra Pradesh, hundreds of arenas operate during the festival, with high-stakes gambling attracting participants from neighboring states. Roosters, fitted with sharp knives, engage in fights as punters place massive bets. The events, often attended by influential figures, highlight the ongoing challenge of enforcing animal cruelty laws. Some roosters are sold for as much as ₹3 lakh, and the total betting volume is estimated to reach ₹150-200 crore.
In previous instances, authorities struggled to curb these illegal activities due to the widespread influence of bettings during this festival. Reports indicate that cockfighting arenas are often equipped with VIP seating, floodlights, and dedicated betting areas, making them a hub for organized crime. Law enforcement officials have been under pressure from activists and legal bodies to take stricter measures against these events.
Law enforcement agencies have intensified crackdowns on illegal gambling networks across the state. Further arrests and legal actions are expected as the investigation progresses. Authorities are also urging the public to report any similar illegal activities to ensure better enforcement of anti-gambling and animal protection laws.
