Former Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis has criticized Shaheen Afridi for his lack of improvement, stating that the left-arm pacer has become too predictable and is struggling to deceive batters.
Pakistan vs New Zealand: Shaheen Afridi’s Struggles
The opening match of the Champions Trophy 2025 is taking place at the National Stadium, Karachi, between hosts Pakistan and New Zealand. Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and opted to bowl first.
Pakistan had a strong start, dismissing Kane Williamson for just 1 run and reducing New Zealand to early trouble. However, Will Young and Tom Latham built a crucial 118-run partnership for the fourth wicket, stabilizing the innings. Young eventually fell for 107 runs, dismissed by Naseem Shah.
However, Shaheen Afridi struggled to make an impact. The left-arm pacer bowled eight overs, conceding 38 runs without picking up a wicket.
Waqar Younis’ Harsh Criticism
Speaking during the on-air commentary, Waqar Younis pointed out Afridi’s shortcomings. He remarked that Shaheen was once known for his deadly yorkers, which troubled batters. However, over time, teams have figured out his strengths, and he has failed to evolve as a bowler.
Waqar further criticized Afridi’s lack of patience and aggression, saying:
“Shaheen Afridi used to bowl excellent yorkers when he was new, but now every batter knows what to expect from him. He hasn’t improved his bowling skills, making him predictable. When he doesn’t get wickets early, he becomes impatient and starts bowling poorly in aggression.”
Pakistan’s Bowling Under Pressure
At the time of writing, New Zealand had reached 198 for 4 in 39 overs, with Pakistan struggling to contain the runs. With Shaheen’s poor form raising concerns, Pakistan will need their spearhead to rediscover his rhythm as the tournament progresses.
