New Zealand opener Will Young became the first batter to score a century in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He reached the milestone in the opening match against Pakistan at the National Stadium, Karachi, on Wednesday, February 19.
Young took 107 balls to complete his century. His innings included 11 fours and 1 six. It was a crucial knock, especially after New Zealand lost three early wickets.
The Kiwi batter had some nervous moments before reaching the hundred. When he was on 87, there was a close run-out appeal, but the replays confirmed he was safe. Again, on 99, he was outside the crease at the non-striker’s end, but the throw missed the stumps, allowing him to complete his century.
New Zealand lost Devon Conway and Kane Williamson in the space of five deliveries. However, Young anchored the innings and ensured New Zealand recovered from the early blows. Interestingly, Rachin Ravindra was expected to play this match, but his injury gave Young an opportunity, which he grabbed with both hands.
Pakistan Hosts an ICC Event After 29 Years
Earlier in the day, Pakistan’s 29-year wait to host an ICC tournament ended as they won the toss and chose to field first. With Young’s century setting the tone for the tournament, fans can expect an exciting Champions Trophy 2025 ahead.
