Goa Police conducted a raid on an illegal cricket betting syndicate operating out of a rented bungalow in Pilerne, Porvorim. Acting on credible intelligence, law enforcement officers searched the premises on the night of February 20, apprehending three individuals placing bets on the Champions Trophy match between India and Bangladesh.
As reported by Times of India, the operation was led by Police Inspector Rahul Parab, supported by a team that included Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) Sitaram Malik, PSI Arun Shirodkar, and Constables Mahadev Naik, Akash Naik, Nitesh Gawde, and Siddhesh Naik.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Maksud Modan (28) and Aasifbhai Jiyaudeenbhai (25) from Botad, Gujarat, and Rizvan Bhash (20) from Rajkot, Gujarat. During the raid, authorities seized four mobile phones, a laptop, internet routers, and other equipment valued at Rs 1,10,000.
A case has been registered under Sections 3 and 4 of the Goa, Daman, and Diu Public Gambling Act. The investigation is being supervised by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Porvorim Vishwesh Karpe and Superintendent of Police (North) Akshat Kaushal. Preliminary findings suggest that the arrested individuals may be linked to a larger betting network operating across multiple states, indicating the possibility of further arrests.
This raid is part of ongoing efforts to address illegal betting syndicates that use online platforms and encrypted communication to conduct their activities. Earlier in February 2025, Chandkheda police in Gujarat also uncovered an online cricket betting operation at Narendra Modi Stadium, arresting five individuals and confiscating cash and mobile phones worth Rs 1,80,750.
Authorities encourage the public to report suspicious betting activities, as law enforcement agencies work to address illegal gambling operations across the country.
