Vizag Police on Sunday arrested YouTube influencer Nani for promoting illegal betting apps. Nani, a fisherman from the port city runs a YouTube channel Local Boi Nani and has amassed 2.5 million followers. He started the channel to showcase the life of a fisherman on the high seas and slowly deviated to betting app promotions.
The issue caught the eyes of the police authorities when a Telangana cadre IPS officer tweeted on betting app content shared by Nani tagging Andhra police officials. The criminal case filed by the police authorities states that a victim who got introduced to online betting apps Dafabet, Parimatch, and Mahadev through Nani promotions had approached the police authorities after losing several lakhs online.
Promoting and participating in betting apps is a crime. Based on my post on X, @vizagcitypolice have arrested a local social media influencer for doing so. This arrest should set a precedent for everyone promoting illegal betting apps. Stay aware. Stay vigilant.@APPOLICE100 pic.twitter.com/sqFQw6nOS5

After Sajjanar’s tweet, Nani released a video apologising for promoting betting apps and said he discontinued all betting app promotions. In a press release, the police said many had lost large sums after investing in such applications. The police appealed to the public not to believe in such apps. Earlier in 2024, Actor Sahil Khan was arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch’s SIT in connection with the Mahadev Betting App case. Betting and gambling are illegal in India and despite the same, several influencers promote the applications to lure of money paid by the operators.
