Afghanistan’s all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai gave his team the perfect start with the ball in their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 clash against England. The 24-year-old dismissed England opener Phil Salt early in the innings, putting the opposition under pressure right from the beginning.
Azmatullah Omarzai Strikes Early
The match, played at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on February 26, saw Afghanistan winning the toss and opting to bat first. Their batting lineup delivered a strong performance, with opener Ibrahim Zadran playing a sensational knock of 117 runs off 146 balls, laced with 12 fours and 6 sixes. His innings helped Afghanistan post a massive total of 325/7 in their 50 overs.
Chasing 326, England needed a solid start, but Afghanistan struck early in the fourth over. Azmatullah Omarzai bowled a brilliant delivery to clean up Phil Salt, leaving England struggling at 19/1.
How Omarzai Dismissed Phil Salt
On the third ball of the fourth over, Omarzai delivered a good-length ball on off-stump. The ball didn’t have much movement but skidded on after pitching. Salt misread the length and attempted an aggressive heave across the line. However, he failed to make proper contact, and the ball went on to crash into the top of middle and off-stump.
Salt, who scored 12 runs off 13 balls with two fours, had to walk back early, giving Afghanistan the upper hand. Omarzai, pumped up after the dismissal, celebrated with passion as his teammates joined in.

Afghanistan’s Champions Trophy Campaign So Far

With a challenging target ahead, England needed their middle order to step up after losing an early wicket. Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s bowlers looked eager to make further inroads and put England under pressure.
