South Africa defeated England by 7 wickets in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, knocking Jos Buttler’s team out of the tournament without a single win.
With this victory, South Africa secured the top spot in Group B with five points. England, on the other hand, finished their campaign without earning a point.
This was Buttler’s last ICC event as captain, but his tenure ended in disappointment as he walked off the field dejected.
England won the toss and opted to bat first but struggled from the start. Marco Jansen removed Phil Salt and Jamie Smith early, and Ben Duckett also fell inside the powerplay.
Joe Root and Harry Brook tried to rebuild, adding 62 runs, but both departed in quick succession. Buttler and Jofra Archer managed to push the total past 150 with a 42-run partnership, but the team collapsed soon after. England were bowled out for 179 in 38.2 overs.
Jansen and Wiaan Mulder took three wickets each, while Keshav Maharaj grabbed two. Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada took one wicket each.
In response, South Africa lost Tristan Stubbs early, but Ryan Rickelton and Rassie van der Dussen steadied the innings with a 36-run stand.
Rickelton fell for 27, but Heinrich Klaasen took charge. He played attacking cricket, smashing boundaries and bringing up his fifth consecutive half-century. Van der Dussen also opened up after a slow start and reached his fifty.
With South Africa just six runs away from victory, Klaasen was dismissed by Adil Rashid. David Miller then finished the match in style with a six, helping South Africa chase down the target in just 29.1 overs.
This defeat ended England’s Champions Trophy journey in disappointment, while South Africa’s dominant performance sent a strong message to the other teams. They now move forward with confidence, aiming for the title.
