College Student Accused of Killing Family Over Online Gaming Conflict in Odisha

A 21-year-old college student allegedly killed his parents and sister in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district early Tuesday morning, reportedly due to their opposition to his online gaming, police said.

As reported by Times of India, the incident took place at around 3 AM in Jayabada Sethi Sahi, under the jurisdiction of the Jagatsinghpur Police Station. The accused, identified as Surjyakant Sethy, allegedly used stones or similar hard objects to assault his father, Prasant Sethy alias Kalia (65), his mother, Kanaklata (62), and his sister, Rosalin (25).

Superintendent of Police Bhawani Sankar Udgata confirmed that Surjyakant fled the scene and hid near the village before being apprehended by authorities. Inspector-in-charge Prabhas Sahu stated that preliminary investigations suggest the accused was frustrated with his family members as they frequently opposed his online gaming habits.

Local residents reported that Surjyakant admitted his actions to them before the police took him into custody. Authorities also suspect that the youth may have been suffering from psychological issues.

A police team led by the SP, accompanied by forensic experts, visited the crime scene to conduct further investigations. The victims’ bodies were sent for post-mortem analysis to determine the cause of death.

Local MLA Amarendra Das disclosed that the family had previously approached him for assistance regarding a property dispute. It remains unclear whether the ongoing family tensions played a role in the case.

The case has raised concerns over gambling and its psychological effects. Police are continuing their investigation, while locals express their concerns over the incident.
