YouTube to Implement Stricter Policies on Online Gambling Content from March 19

YouTube is updating its policies on online gambling-related content to regulate its presence on the platform. The Google-owned video-sharing platform announced on March 4 that these changes will take effect starting March 19, 2025.

As reported by Money Control, under the updated regulations, content creators will no longer be allowed to include URLs, embedded links, visual logos, or verbal references to gambling websites or applications that have not been certified by Google Ads or reviewed by YouTube. Currently, YouTube only permits links to gambling platforms that comply with local legal requirements.

Stricter Regulations on Gambling Content and Advertising

Furthermore, any content that promises guaranteed returns from gambling activities will be removed, regardless of whether the online gambling site or application has received Google’s approval. This decision builds on YouTube’s existing policies regarding illegal or regulated goods and services, which already prohibit directing users to uncertified gambling platforms.

Additionally, YouTube clarified that content featuring or promoting online casinos, gambling sites, or betting applications, while not violating its community guidelines, will be subject to age restrictions. This means such content will only be accessible to users who are logged in and over the age of 18, preventing minors from viewing gambling-related videos.

YouTube acknowledged that these policy changes may affect content creators who focus on gambling-related content, such as casino games and betting applications. However, the company stated that the move is aimed at ensuring a safer environment for its users. “We know this update may impact creators who focus on online gambling content like casino games and applications, but we believe these changes are a necessary step in protecting our community, especially younger viewers,” YouTube stated.

These updates come as online betting and gambling platforms continue to advertise on YouTube and other social media channels in India and other regions. In India, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued multiple advisories warning social media platforms, advertising intermediaries, and influencers against promoting gambling and betting services.

In March 2024, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), India’s consumer watchdog, also issued an advisory against endorsing gambling platforms. It stated that action could be taken against manufacturers, advertisers, publishers, intermediaries, social media platforms, and endorsers violating the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

With these updated policies, YouTube aims to regulate the presence of gambling content on its platform, aligning with broader industry trends toward oversight of digital gambling promotions.
