Ben Stokes might become the next captain of England’s ODI team. Rob Key, the managing director of England’s men’s cricket, has said that Stokes is a strong option. The decision comes after Jos Buttler stepped down as white-ball captain following England’s early exit from the Champions Trophy.
Rob Key praised Stokes for his leadership qualities. He said that Stokes is a great tactician and knows how to handle pressure. He also brings the best out of his teammates.
“He is someone who can guide the team when things are tough,” Key said. “The main concern is how it will affect his workload. We don’t want to put too much pressure on him.”
Ben Stokes’ History in ODIs
Ben Stokes retired from ODI cricket earlier but returned to play in last year’s ODI World Cup. His last T20 match for England was in the T20 World Cup final in 2022, where England won the trophy.
Stokes had earlier mentioned that he would be happy to return to the white-ball team if needed. However, he also said that he was satisfied with what he had already achieved in ODIs and T20s.
“If I get a call to play, I will say yes,” Stokes had said in 2023. “But if I don’t, I am happy to sit back and watch others play.”
With Stokes’ experience and leadership, England might be looking at a strong future in ODIs under his captaincy.
