The Tamil Nadu government has granted a six-week extension to Real Money Gaming (RMG) operators for implementing the Tamil Nadu Online Gaming Authority (Real Money Games) Regulations, 2025. The deadline for compliance is now set for March 26, 2025.
According to Storyboard 18, multiple gaming federations met with Tamil Nadu Online Gaming Authority (TNOGA) officials to request additional time for implementation. RMG operators cited complex technological challenges as a key hurdle in complying with the new regulations.
Md. Nasimuddin, Chairperson of TNOGA, confirmed the extension in an official communication to stakeholders. He stated, “Now based on the representations received from various gaming federations seeking time to comply with the above regulations, the Tamil Nadu Online Gaming Authority grants six weeks from the date of the above notification to all the companies and other concerned entities to comply with the regulations.”
Key Provisions of the Tamil Nadu Online Gaming Regulations
The Tamil Nadu Online Gaming Authority officially notified the regulations through the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette Notification No. 6, dated February 12, 2025. The rules came into effect immediately upon publication.
The notification mandates strict compliance measures for online gaming operators, including:
- Age Restrictions: Minors under the age of 18 are prohibited from playing real-money games.
- Aadhaar Verification: Online gaming platforms must verify player identities using Aadhaar to ensure compliance with age restrictions.
- Gameplay Warnings: Pop-up warnings must be displayed when a player engages in continuous gameplay for more than one hour. These messages must reappear every 30 minutes to inform players about their total playtime.
- Deposit Limits: Platforms must allow players to set daily, weekly, and monthly monetary limits. Each deposit must trigger a pop-up displaying the player’s spending details.
- Addiction Warnings: A cautionary message stating, “ONLINE GAMING IS ADDICTIVE IN NATURE,” must be continuously displayed on the login pages of gaming websites and apps.
Legal Challenges from RMG Operators
Several RMG companies have taken legal action against the Tamil Nadu government over these gaming regulations. Industry stakeholders argue that certain restrictions may impact business operations and require further consultation.
With the new deadline in place, online gaming operators now have until March 26, 2025, to comply with the regulatory framework. The gaming industry continues to monitor developments as discussions between operators and the Tamil Nadu government progress.
