Jasprit Bumrah has been out of action since January, and it looks like his return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) will take more time. According to a report by the Times of India, the star pacer is likely to miss the first few matches of IPL 2025.
Jasprit Bumrah Still in Rehabilitation
Jasprit Bumrah is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. While his medical reports are positive, he has not yet started bowling at full speed. The report suggests that Bumrah might only return in April.
A BCCI source shared details about his recovery:
“Bumrah’s medical reports are okay. He has resumed bowling at the CoE. However, it is unlikely he’ll be able to bowl at the start of the IPL in another fortnight. As per current status, the first week of April looks a more realistic date for him to get back to high-intensity cricket.”
Mumbai Indians’ Early Challenges
Mumbai Indians will play four matches in the first two weeks of IPL 2025. Bumrah’s absence could make their bowling attack weaker. The medical team is being careful with his workload to avoid any setbacks.
The source added:
“The medical team will gradually build up his workload and intensity. Unless he is able to bowl full tilt without any discomfort for some days, the medical team is unlikely to clear him.”
Focus on England Test Series
The BCCI is also keeping an eye on Bumrah’s fitness for the important five-match Test series against England after the IPL. The selectors do not want to risk injuries to both Bumrah and Mohammed Shami during the long tour.
A BCCI official explained:
“How Shami and Bumrah endure the long IPL will be important. If the selectors get both of them together for two-three Tests, it will be the ideal situation. Nobody wants either of them breaking down in the middle of a Test, like what happened with Bumrah in Sydney.”
Backup Fast Bowlers in Line
If Bumrah or Shami face fitness issues, India has backup fast bowlers ready. Mohammed Siraj is expected to lead the pace attack, while Harshit Rana, Akash Deep, and Mukesh Kumar are also in contention.
Mumbai Indians and Indian cricket fans will be hoping for Bumrah’s quick recovery, but for now, the wait continues.
