Delhi Police have uncovered a cricket betting syndicate operating out of West Delhi’s Karampura. Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, with over Rs 22 lakh recovered from various bank accounts linked to the operation.
As reported by The Indian Express, the accused, identified as Manish Sahani, Yogesh Kukreja, and Suraj, were caught during a raid conducted by the Crime Branch team on March 6. Acting on a tip-off, the team, led by Inspector Sandeep Singh, raided a flat at DLF Towers in Karampura, where they found the illegal betting setup.
According to DCP (Crime) Aditya Gautam, the syndicate was placing bets on the ICC Champions Trophy semifinal match between South Africa and New Zealand, which took place on March 5 at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Pakistan.
Investigations revealed that Sahani, 42, previously ran a used car business in Hakikat Nagar but turned to betting after incurring financial losses. Sahani managed bets based on call recordings from participants. His associate, 31-year-old Yogesh Kukreja, joined the betting operation in 2021 and was responsible for handling financial transactions. The third accused, Suraj, 24, also played a role in managing the accounts.
This case follows the arrest of two other individuals, Praveen Kochhar and Sanjeev Kumar, who were caught placing bets on the ICC Champions Trophy match between India and Australia. They were apprehended during a separate raid on March 4.
Authorities are continuing the investigation into the syndicate’s operations and potential connections to other betting networks.
