Bengaluru Techie Falls Prey to Gaming App Scam

A 37-year-old software engineer has lodged a police complaint after losing ₹90 lakh on a gaming app over two years. He approached the East Division Cyber Crime police, seeking legal action against the app and its operators.

According to The Hindu, based on the complaint, the police have registered a case against unknown individuals. They have been charged under the IT Act and Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with cheating and fraud involving dishonest inducement of property delivery.

How the Gaming App Lured the Victim

The complainant stated that in June 2023, a friend introduced him to the gaming app, claiming it offered good returns. The friend shared a link that directed him to the website “Namma Exchange,” where he created a user ID and password.

The platform allowed users to place bets on cricket, football, casino games, and other online betting options. To participate, users were required to recharge their accounts. The app provided individual bank account details for deposits.

Initially, the victim deposited ₹10,000 and played in the casino section. He won ₹40,000 the same day, which was credited to his bank account. Encouraged by this, he transferred ₹50 lakh from his savings, expecting higher returns. The amount he won through betting was also credited to his account.

Escalating Losses and Financial Ruin

As the victim continued playing, he lost a significant portion of his money. Seeking advice, he consulted his friend, who assured him that losses were common at first and encouraged him to invest more to recover.

Following this advice, he deposited another ₹50 lakh from his savings. However, instead of recovering his losses, he managed to win only ₹10 lakh as profit.

Determined to regain his money, the victim took a ₹40 lakh loan and continued playing from June 3, 2023, to March 6, 2025. Eventually, he lost the entire amount, leading him to file a police complaint.

Police Investigation Underway

Authorities are investigating the app’s operations and tracking the bank accounts used for transactions. The case highlights growing concerns over online betting platforms and their impact on financial security.

The police have urged citizens to exercise caution before investing in online gaming apps. Further updates on the investigation will follow.
