Pakistan hosted the Champions Trophy after 29 years. It was a big event for the country, but things did not go as planned. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has suffered a huge financial loss.
Pakistan Spent a Lot on Stadiums
Pakistan renovated three stadiums before the tournament. This cost a lot of money. However, India refused to travel to Pakistan for the event. Because of this, some matches were moved to a different country under a hybrid model. Out of 15 matches, only 10 were played in Pakistan.
Unfortunately, many games in Pakistan were washed out due to rain. This affected the overall tournament. Pakistan, the host nation, could not fully enjoy the home advantage.
Huge Financial Loss for PCB
According to The Telegraph, PCB spent PKR 18 billion (Rs 4,823 crore) on stadium upgrades. This was 50% more than the planned budget. Additionally, $40 million (Rs 3,320 crore) was used for event preparations.
However, the earnings from ticket sales and hosting fees were only Rs 498 crore. Because of this, PCB faced a massive loss of Rs 7,445 crore.
Pakistan’s Early Exit Made Things Worse
Pakistan’s performance in the tournament was disappointing. They crashed out in the group stage. The team played only one match at home. Their game against India was held in Dubai, and another match was abandoned due to rain.
With fewer games in Pakistan, broadcasters showed less interest. Sponsorships were also affected, adding to PCB’s financial troubles.
The Champions Trophy was expected to be a grand event for Pakistan. Instead, it turned into a financial disaster for the PCB.
