Pakistan-Origin Cricketer Dies on Field While Observing Fast in Extreme Heat

A tragic incident took place in Adelaide, Australia, during a cricket match. Junaid Zafar Khan, a cricketer of Pakistani origin, collapsed on the field and passed away. The extreme heat made the situation worse.

The match was played at Concordia College Oval on Saturday at around 4 PM ACDT. It was between Old Concordians and Prince Alfred Old Collegians. At the time of the match, the temperature was above 40°C.

As per local cricket rules, matches are stopped if the temperature reaches 42°C. However, games can continue with changes in rules when it is below that limit.

Junaid Zafar Khan collapsed on the field, and paramedics were called immediately. They tried their best to revive him, but he could not be saved.

Junaid was fasting due to Ramadan but was drinking water during the match. Islamic rules allow sick or weak people to skip fasting or drink water when needed.

His cricket club, Old Concordians Cricket Club, released a statement expressing their grief. They said:

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of a valued member of the club. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, he sadly did not survive. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and teammates in this difficult time.”

Junaid moved to Adelaide from Pakistan in 2013 and worked in the tech industry. His friend Hasan Anjum said that Junaid had great potential and was meant for big things. Another friend, Najam Hassan, called him a “gem of a person.”

The incident happened during a heatwave in South Australia. Cities like Sydney and Victoria also recorded temperatures close to 40°C.

Health Should Always Be a Priority

A few days before this, Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami was seen drinking water and energy drinks while playing in the Champions Trophy 2025. Some Islamic scholars criticized him for it. However, incidents like Junaid’s show why staying hydrated and healthy is important, even during fasting.

Junaid Zafar Khan’s passing is a sad reminder that health should always come first.
