The Indian government has intensified its efforts to curb illegal online gambling and betting platforms, issuing blocking orders against over 1,000 gambling-related websites over the past two years. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, disclosed this information during a Lok Sabha session on Wednesday, emphasizing the risks posed by unregulated online gaming.

As per the Lok Sabha discussion earlier today, the government reiterated its stance on the urgent need to regulate online gambling platforms. Officials emphasized that stricter enforcement is required to curb illegal activities and protect vulnerable individuals. The discussion highlighted growing concerns over financial fraud, addiction, and mental health risks associated with online betting. Authorities confirmed that policy interventions will continue evolving to strengthen oversight and ensure a safer digital environment.

The central government has been working closely with state authorities to combat online gambling’s adverse effects. Vaishnaw stated, “The government is actively working on strengthening the legal framework to address online gambling and related cyber threats.”

Government’s Regulatory Measures

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has implemented several key regulatory actions:

• Amendments to IT Rules, 2021: The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 were revised to hold online gaming intermediaries accountable for content that promotes gambling, money laundering, or child exploitation.
• Website and App Blocking Orders: Under Section 69A of the IT Act, 2000, the government has blocked access to websites that violate the law and threaten public order.
• State and Central Coordination: Authorities are working together to ensure stricter enforcement against illegal betting platforms.

Concerns Over Online Gaming Addiction

During the Lok Sabha session, MP S. Jothimani questioned whether the government had conducted studies on online gaming addiction and its link to suicides among youth. In response, the government acknowledged the risks but confirmed that the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) does not maintain specific suicide data related to online gaming. However, policymakers remain concerned about increasing cases of financial distress linked to online betting.
