Influencers promoting Betting Apps are like Cyber Terrorists, says former Police Commissioner

Former Cyberabad Police Commissioner, TGSRTC Managing Director V.C. Sajjanar has strongly condemned influencers endorsing online betting apps, equating them to “cyber terrorists.” He emphasized the severe consequences these promotions have on society, urging strict legal action against those involved.

According to a report by Deccan Chronicle, Sajjanar criticized the increasing trend of social media influencers and celebrities endorsing online betting platforms. He stated that such endorsements mislead people into believing these apps are legal, often leading to financial losses and legal troubles for users.

Sajjanar’s Concerns Over Online Betting App Promotions

Sajjanar highlighted that many of these betting platforms operate outside Indian legal boundaries. “Influencers promoting these apps are not just violating laws but also putting innocent people at financial risk,” he said. He warned that endorsing illegal online gaming platforms can lead to criminal charges under cyber laws.

He further urged the government and law enforcement agencies to take swift action against influencers, celebrities, and social media figures who promote these platforms. “People follow influencers blindly, assuming these apps are safe,” Sajjanar remarked. He stressed the need for stringent regulations to prevent misleading endorsements.

Sajjanar revealed that authorities have tracked 90 million digital footprints linked to online betting activities, highlighting the vast reach of these platforms. He warned that such large-scale digital transactions pose serious risks, as many users unknowingly fall into financial traps.

Impact on Public and Rising Financial Fraud Cases

The former police commissioner pointed out that many users fall into the trap of online betting, unaware of its potential financial and legal repercussions. “Several cases of financial fraud have emerged where users lost their savings,” he noted.

To combat misinformation, Sajjanar has been actively posting awareness messages. “I have shared more than 100 awareness posts to educate people about the dangers of online betting,” he stated. He urged more efforts from authorities and media to spread awareness.

Drawing parallels, Sajjanar compared the current online betting scenario to Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) scams from the early 2000s. He explained that these scams operated on a similar model—luring people with quick money, only to leave them in financial distress. “These online betting schemes are the modern version of those scams,” he cautioned.

Call for Stricter Regulations

Sajjanar has urged the central and state governments to impose stricter laws against the promotion of illegal betting apps. He believes stronger enforcement and regulatory measures can curb the influence of misleading endorsements.

“Public awareness is crucial to prevent financial fraud,” he emphasized, advising people to verify the legitimacy of any gaming platform before engaging with it.

Authorities continue to examine the legal implications surrounding these promotions, with further actions expected in the coming days.
