Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the rising online betting menace in the state. The initiative aims to curb illegal gambling activities that have reportedly affected numerous families.
According to a report by Siasat, Revanth Reddy made the announcement during the budget session of the Telangana Assembly on March 26. He emphasized that the state government would take strict action against online betting operators, along with gutka and other banned substances.
He further stated that the government plans to amend the 2017 legislation enacted to prohibit online betting and gaming apps. The current law imposes a maximum punishment of two years, which Reddy argued is insufficient. He said, “The amendment is necessary to impose stricter penalties and effectively control these activities.”
Revanth Reddy also mentioned that if required, the CB-CID would be involved in the investigation. The government’s decision reflects its commitment to addressing the adverse impact of online gambling on vulnerable communities.
Meanwhile, Telangana police have launched a crackdown on individuals promoting illegal betting apps. Senior IPS officer C.P. Sajjanar filed a complaint against social media influencer Bayya Sunny Yadav for endorsing such platforms. Yadav allegedly encouraged his followers to invest in online betting apps, misleading them with claims of easy financial gains. Sajjanar warned, “Those who exploit innocent people for money will not be spared.”
Former Telangana Police Commissioner C.P. Sajjanar has strongly condemned influencers who promote online betting apps, likening their actions to those of “cyber terrorists.” He stated that such endorsements mislead the public and contribute to financial distress among vulnerable individuals. He emphasized the need for stringent action against those who promote these illegal activities.
As part of an ongoing crackdown, Hyderabad Police have registered a case against 25 celebrities, including actors Rana Daggubati, Vijay Deverakonda, and Prakash Raj, for endorsing betting apps. The case was filed under the Public Gambling Act and relevant sections of the IPC, following allegations that these celebrities promoted illegal gambling platforms. Authorities stated that endorsements by influential personalities mislead the public and contribute to financial losses among users. Police have warned that further action will be taken against those involved in promoting unlawful betting activities.
