A UAE-based startup has introduced a sports betting app that allows users to predict football match outcomes without involving money, ensuring it aligns with Islamic principles.
According to Hindustan Times, the app, named Hajem Sports, is the creation of Zaid Abu Soud, a former mixed martial arts (MMA) organizer. He designed the platform to let Muslims enjoy the excitement of predicting game results without engaging in gambling, which is prohibited in Islam.
“It’s about the feeling – the high of winning without the financial interaction associated with it,” Abu Soud explained.
Hajem Sports functions similarly to traditional betting apps but eliminates monetary stakes. Instead of placing financial bets, users compete for points and earn digital rewards, ensuring compliance with Islamic laws. The app features league tables where users can compete against each other, climbing rankings based on their prediction accuracy. Gambling, or maysir or qimar, is forbidden under Islamic teachings as it promotes greed and financial instability. Islamic law equates gambling with alcohol and idolatry, warning that such activities can lead believers away from righteousness.
By removing the financial element, Hajem Sports allows Muslim sports fans to experience the thrill of betting without violating religious principles.
Abu Soud noted that his research into Western betting apps revealed that many users gamble small amounts for entertainment rather than financial gain. He wanted to offer a similar experience to Muslims worldwide, focusing on competition rather than money. However, some argue that removing the financial stake may alter the betting experience, making it different from traditional sports gambling.
“They’re ‘betting,’ but not with money,” Abu Soud told The National. “They’re ‘betting’ with their reputation and know-how. They want to prove to their friends that they are smarter than them, and that’s what Hajem lets them do.”
The app currently generates revenue through the sale of digital accessories, such as avatar skins, rather than monetary bets. This business model ensures the platform remains engaging while adhering to Islamic guidelines.
