Tamil Nadu is making a move in Indian esports with the launch of the Chennai Esports Global Championship (CeGC). This marks the first-ever global esports tournament initiated by an Indian state government.
Set to take place in Chennai later this year, CeGC will feature top esports teams from around the world, competing across multiple game titles. The initiative represents a major investment by the Tamil Nadu Government in esports, reinforcing the state’s commitment to growing the industry and setting standards.
Government Support and Budget Allocation
The Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department of Tamil Nadu is leading the initiative. The department has been allocated ₹562 crore in the state’s 2025-2026 budget, with a portion designated to bring CeGC to life. This move aims to establish Chennai as a leading esports destination, capable of hosting world-class competitions.
While the official game titles and tournament details are yet to be announced, CeGC builds on Tamil Nadu’s recent esports initiatives. Notably, the CM’s Trophy 2024 successfully integrated esports competitions, organized by Skyesports, drawing over 5,000 participants statewide.
Esports Gains Recognition in India
The launch of CeGC reflects esports’ growing legitimacy as a competitive sport in India. This follows the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ decision earlier this year to include esports in its cash incentive program, a move welcomed by industry professionals.
Esports has also gained traction on the global stage. The discipline is now a medal event at the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. Additionally, esports is set to debut as a standalone Olympic Esports event in 2027. With CeGC, Tamil Nadu is taking proactive steps to nurture homegrown talent and position India as a strong competitor in global esports.
As anticipation builds for the tournament, CeGC is poised to transform India’s esports ecosystem, bringing international recognition and fostering new opportunities for professional gamers.
