Senior IPS Officer Shikha Goel Likely to Lead SIT in Betting Apps Probe

The Telangana police are intensifying their investigation into the promotion of betting apps, with plans to summon the promoters of 25 such applications. Influencers and celebrities who endorsed these apps on social media are also under scrutiny. Law enforcement officials have been directed to compile detailed reports on the investigation, which will soon be submitted to the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

According to a report by Deccan Chronicle, the state government is considering senior IPS officers, including Director General rank officer Shikha Goel, to lead the SIT. The final decision is yet to be made, but authorities are emphasizing the urgency of addressing the increasing influence of betting apps.

A senior official stated, “The SIT is yet to be finalized. Names of some senior officers are under consideration. Considering the seriousness of the cases and the betting apps menace, the government is considering Shikha Goel to head or monitor the SIT.” Once established, the SIT will take over all related cases registered across different districts for further investigation.

Authorities have already questioned several influencers regarding their agreements with app management, payment methods, and possible hawala transactions. The police are investigating the extent of financial involvement between these individuals and the betting app promoters.

Miyapur police have registered cases against 25 influencers, film actors, and celebrities for endorsing betting apps. The cases were filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Telangana State Gaming Act, and the Information Technology (IT) Act. Similarly, Punjagutta police have registered cases against 11 influencers for promoting these apps on social media.

Miyapur police have filed a memo before the court in connection with the case. Police officials have also questioned several influencers, anchors, and celebrities suspected of being involved in promoting illegal betting platforms.
