Telangana HC Directs Police to Issue Notice in Betting Apps Case

The Telangana High Court has instructed the Miyapur police to issue a notice under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita to Telugu TV anchor Vishnu Priya for questioning in connection with a betting apps case.

According to a report by The Times of India, Justice N. Tukaramji issued the order while hearing a petition filed by Vishnu Priya seeking to quash two First Information Reports (FIRs) against her. The FIRs allege that she promoted betting applications, leading users to engage in online gambling and incur financial losses.

Justice Tukaramji directed, “Miyapur police should issue a notice under Section 35(3) and ensure due process is followed.” The court also instructed Vishnu Priya to cooperate with the investigation.

Vishnu Priya’s counsel, Vasundhara Reddy, argued, “The police registered two FIRs for the same offense in different stations without substantial evidence.” Additional Public Prosecutor Veeramalla Jitender Rao informed the court, “Panjagutta police have already issued a notice under Section 35(3).”

The court emphasized adherence to the Supreme Court’s guidelines set in the Arnesh Kumar judgment, which outlines procedures for police in such investigations. Previously, anchor Syamala received similar relief and complied by appearing before the police and accepting the notice under Section 35(3). Law enforcement officials are treating social media influencers who endorsed betting apps through advertisements as accused in multiple FIRs.
