The increasing number of suicides linked to online gambling has raised concerns across Tamil Nadu. PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss has questioned the state government’s stance on banning online gambling and preventing such tragedies.
According to a report by Nakkheeran, the latest incident involved Vennila, a woman from Midnakuppam village in Natrapalli taluk, Tirupattur district. She allegedly took her own life after her husband, Madankumar, lost significant amounts of money in online gambling, plunging their family into financial distress. Madankumar, who worked in a construction company, not only lost his earnings but also took loans to continue gambling, worsening their economic crisis.
In his tweet, Anbumani Ramadoss expressed his condolences to Vennila’s family and highlighted the devastating impact of online gambling. He stated, “This is proof that online gambling can destroy not only the players but also their families.”
The PMK leader pointed out that Vennila’s death marks the 10th suicide in the past three months. Since the Madras High Court struck down the DMK government’s online gambling ban, 27 people have reportedly died by suicide in the last one and a half years. The total number of deaths attributed to online gambling has now reached 87.
Ramadoss emphasized, “Banning online gambling and thereby preventing suicides is not an impossible task.” He urged the Tamil Nadu government to push for an urgent Supreme Court hearing on the matter. He added, “If an immediate ban is not feasible, a new law should be passed in the Legislative Assembly to prohibit gambling, including online rummy.”
The PMK leader criticized the government’s inaction, stating that 77 of the 87 gambling-related suicides occurred under the DMK regime. He pointed out that 15 months have passed since the Tamil Nadu government appealed the Madras High Court ruling, yet the Supreme Court has not taken up the case. He further alleged that the Tamil Nadu government remains “unmoved” despite continuous demands for action.
With suicides continuing to rise, Ramadoss demanded the state government clarify its position on online gambling. “Is the government going to prevent online gambling by approaching the Supreme Court or enacting a new law? Or will it watch as suicides continue?” he questioned.
The Tamil Nadu government’s response remains awaited as concerns over online gambling intensify.
