Karnataka Plans New Law to Ban Gambling, Permit Skill-Based Games, Says Minister

In a decisive move against online betting, Telangana’s Director General of Police (DGP), Jitender, has established a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT). This action follows Chief Minister Revanth Reddy‘s recent announcement to curb the growing menace of online gambling.

According to a report by the Times of India, the SIT will operate under the supervision of Crime Investigation Department (CID) chief Shikha Goel. The team comprises Inspector General of Police (Provisions & Logistics) M Ramesh, Superintendent of Police (Intelligence) Ch Sindhu Sharma, CID SP K Venkata Lakshmi, Additional Superintendent S Chandrakanth, and DSP (CID) M Shankar.

The DGP’s order outlines the SIT’s mandate:

  • “The SIT shall thoroughly and expeditiously investigate all online betting cases that are specifically assigned or transferred to it.”
  • “It shall study the existing ecosystem that enables and facilitates online betting/gaming and recommend necessary reforms to curb these activities.”
  • “The SIT shall evaluate legal provisions, regulations, and restrictions that can be introduced to prevent the organizing, promotion, and advertising of online betting/gaming and suggest legal action in public interest.”

Additionally, the SIT is tasked with recommending policy and regulatory changes for payment systems and financial institutions to detect and block transactions linked to illegal betting operations. These recommendations will be submitted to the Reserve Bank of India. The team is expected to present its report to the government within 90 days.

This move follows a recent crackdown by the Miyapur police, who arrested two agents of an online betting syndicate two weeks ago. The arrests were made as part of an intensified effort to curb online gambling networks operating in the state.

This development comes in the wake of several recent cases registered across Hyderabad, including instances where celebrities were booked for promoting online betting. Addressing the assembly, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy emphasized the government’s commitment to eradicating online betting, highlighting its detrimental impact, which has led to several suicides across Telangana.
