Punjab Kings recently added their name to this list by defending just 111 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders. Let’s look at the top five lowest totals defended in IPL history:
5) 119/8 – Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Pune Warriors (2013)
Venue: Pune | Date: April 17, 2013
SRH scored 119/8 in their 20 overs. The match looked easy for Pune at first, but SRH bowlers turned the game. Amit Mishra took 4 wickets for 19 runs, including a hat-trick in the 19th over. Pune lost 5 wickets for just 7 runs and were all out for 108. SRH won by 11 runs.
4) 119/8 – Kings XI Punjab vs Mumbai Indians (2009)
Venue: Durban | Date: April 29, 2009
KXIP posted 119/8 with Kumar Sangakkara scoring 45 not out. Mumbai Indians were in trouble early, losing 3 wickets for just 12 runs. JP Duminy fought hard with 59 runs but got out in the final over. Punjab held their nerve and won the game by 3 runs.
3) 118/10 – Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Mumbai Indians (2018)
Venue: Mumbai | Date: April 24, 2018
SRH were bowled out for just 118. But their bowlers came out firing. Rashid Khan bowled a brilliant spell, giving away only 11 runs in 4 overs. Mumbai Indians were under pressure and collapsed for just 87. SRH won the match by 31 runs.
2) 116/9 – Chennai Super Kings vs Kings XI Punjab (2009)
Venue: Durban | Date: May 20, 2009
CSK scored 116/9 and needed their bowlers to step up. Muralidaran bowled with control and took 2 wickets for just 8 runs. Ashwin and Raina also took two wickets each. Punjab couldn’t chase the target and finished on 92/8. CSK won by 24 runs.
1) 111/10 – Punjab Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders (2025)
Venue: Mullanpur | Date: April 15, 2025
This was the lowest total ever defended in IPL history. Punjab Kings scored only 111 runs. But their bowlers didn’t give up. Chahal took 4 wickets, and Jansen picked up 3, including the big wicket of Andre Russell. KKR were bowled out for just 95 runs. Punjab won the match by 16 runs in a stunning finish.
