Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has stepped forward to help his former teammate and close friend, Vinod Kambli, who is going through a tough phase in his life due to health issues and financial struggles.
As per a report in the Times of India, Gavaskar will support Kambli through the CHAMPS Foundation, which helps retired sportspersons in need. The foundation will provide Kambli with a monthly allowance of ₹30,000 for the rest of his life. On top of that, ₹30,000 more will be given every year to take care of his medical expenses.
This kind gesture comes after Gavaskar met Kambli during the 50th anniversary celebration of the Wankhede Stadium in January this year. A video from the event had gone viral where Kambli was seen touching Gavaskar’s feet, showing his deep respect.
Kambli, who was once seen as one of India’s brightest cricketing talents, has been in and out of the hospital due to serious health problems. In December last year, he was admitted for almost two weeks with a urinary infection and was treated by Dr Shailesh Thakur at Akruti Health City Hospital in Thane. The doctor confirmed that Gavaskar had visited them to understand Kambli’s condition and expressed his wish to help.
The Times of India report mentions that Gavaskar met with two of Kambli’s doctors – Dr Thakur and another physician – just a day after their Wankhede meeting. After learning about his health, he immediately asked the foundation to start providing support.
Kambli had once shared the record-breaking 664-run partnership in a school match with Sachin Tendulkar back in 1988, which made him a household name in India. While his international career never reached the heights it once promised, many fans still remember his talent and contribution to the game.
Now, with Gavaskar stepping in, it’s a reminder of the strong bonds that cricket builds—and how legends continue to look after their own, both on and off the field.
