Over 20 arrested for illegal gambling across Assam, Vijayawada and Ahmedabad

Assam
Police arrested two people in Assam’s Cachar district on Thursday for taking bets on IPL matches. The arrested individuals have been identified as Gautam Roy and Rupal Mudak according to Superintendent of Police, Numal Mahatta of Cachar district.
“We have intensified our operation against IPL gambling in the district and arrested a few persons earlier also. Based on secret information, we launched an operation early in the Shivaji Nagar area of Silchar town and arrested two persons who were running IPL gambling in the entire Barak Valley region,” Mahatta said in a statement.
The police recovered Rs 39 lakh in cash from the raid site along with a laptop, mobile phones and three ledger books that were being used to record transactions. Further investigations are underway.
Vijayawada
In another similar case, Gudivada police of Krishna district booked nine individuals for partaking in IPL betting. These people were engaged in betting activities since the last 40 days according to Gudiwada DSP P Srikanth.
Working on a tip-off, the police raided the iron shop where the accused youngsters were betting on IPL matches last Wednesday. The arrested individuals are identified as Sheikh Basha, Mohammad Mujeeb Rehman, Abdul Zaheer, Tirumalashetti Daivadanam, Chigurupalli Panduranga Rao, Tirumaleshtty Yesu, Sheikh Shahimsha, Gandeti Durgaprasad and Sheikh Ismail.
The police revealed that arrested individuals contacted a bookie through social media from where they received their IDs and passwords for betting on the matches. The payments to the betting accounts were being done through UPI apps according to The Times of India.
Ahmedabad
Another 11 people were arrested in Jodhpur village area by the Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) for gambling. All individuals have been charged under various sections of the Prevention of Gambling Act.
Acting on a message, the police raided the house of a man named Ajit alias Lalo Thakor who was reportedly running a gambling ring in his house. During the raid, the police seized Rs 95,290 in cash, playing cards, and mobile phones, as reported by The Indian Express.
