Online gaming conversion racket accused may have links to elements out of country

In the recently uncovered online gaming religious conversion racket, the police have found Pakistani email IDs on the arrested individual Shahnawaz Khan’s mobile phone, raising suspicion of links to a bigger racket being operated from outside the country.

Shahnawaz was recently sent to a 14-day judicial custody by UP’s Ghaziabad court under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act for running an alleged online gaming and religious conversion racket with another individual named Abdul Rehman.

The police sprang into action after one of the boy’s parents filed a complaint after seeking help from various sources, claiming that their son had been behaving differently for some time.

After conducting preliminary investigations, the police found out that the boy had been in contact with another person who was teaching him about a different religion. Further interrogation of the boy revealed that he was not the only one and there were other boys too.

As many as four kids were revealed to be lured in by these individuals with some of them in contact with Rehman since 2021. Further investigation in the case is ongoing.

According to previous reports, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) believes that the group has been using online games like Fortnite and social services like Discord to lure in kids. The commission has asked the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) for an investigation of Fortnite and Discord for possible links to exploitation of children through online games.
