Himachal Pradesh: Police bust interstate online betting racket, arrest 11

Dharamsala police have arrested eleven individuals in a recent bust of an interstate online betting and cybercrime gang. The arrested individuals have been sent to judicial custody while the police are expecting further arrests in the case.

Talking to the media, SP Kangra, Shalini Agnihotri said that during interrogation the police found that the arrested individuals were from different states which included Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

The police acted on a recent FIR filed on June 15 about a potential interstate betting gang operating in the area. The police conducted raids on the said locations and arrested the individuals under section 420 of the IPC.

During the raids, the police seized 10 laptops, 1 CPU, 1 hard disk, 6 mobile phones, 38 passbooks, 27 checkbooks, 24 ATM cards, and 20 SIM cards from Paprola and 3 laptops, 32 mobile phones, 10 ATM cards, 13 SIM cards, 1 router, 1 passport, 7 Aadhar cards, 8 PAN cards, and 3 voter cards from Mohali as reported by Hill Post.

The FIR mentioned unauthorized online transactions taking place, amounting to Rs 65 lakh, in the complainant’s bank account in one month. Further investigation of the same revealed that several other bank accounts were also used for similar transactions, amounting to crores of rupees.

Teer gambling racket busted in Guwahati, five arrested

The Guwahati city police simultaneously busted three hideouts where bets were being taken on “teer” or local archery matches. The police seized Rs 36,364 in cash, six mobile phones, and a diary containing records of all the bets during the raid on Tuesday and seized Rs 24,090, five mobile phones and betting records from another on June 16.

It is one of the most popular sports in Meghalaya in which 20 or so archers shoot as many arrows as possible at a straw bundle 50 meters away. People usually bet on the number of arrows that will hit the stack.

Incidentally, teer gambling is considered as legal in Meghalaya since 1982 and is regulated by the Meghalaya Amusements and Betting Tax (Amendment) Act, 1982.
