Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has signed up as the brand ambassador of illegal sports betting, casino and gambling website Crickex. The illegal platform had recently sponsored Chepauk Super Gillies (CSG), a team that participates in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).

Crickex’s major focus is on sports betting, so partnering with a sportsperson, in this case Uthappa, did fit the bill. However, the former cricketer agreeing to it is a surprise considering his goodwill and the fact that he is also a brand ambassador of blockchain-based fantasy sports platform, Sportiqo, which is a legal entity as per Indian laws.

Whether Uthappa has conducted his due diligence or not, or he has knowingly accepted the offer from Crickex cannot be proved. Meanwhile, these illegal offshore betting websites roping in celebrities and social media influencers has become common in the last few months and the trend is only growing. Even after several advisories from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) celebrities are teaming up to promote these illegal gambling platforms.

Apart from sponsoring sports teams and leagues, these illegal betting websites and their surrogate brands also make their way into newspapers, magazines and on to billboards.

On the other hand, the government has taken scant action against these entities and celebrities which is possibly what explains the reason for the growth of this trend. However, people have now started asking questions as to how these advertisements are being published.

As per recent reports MIB is likely to issue another advisory mainly focusing on social media influencers and celebrities this time to curb rampant promotions of illegal betting websites by them.
