In a recent session of the state legislative assembly, the issue of online gambling emerged as a concern, with AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam (senior) drawing attention to its detrimental impact on the youth of our state. Islam expressed deep concern, stating, “This social menace has wreaked havoc among our youth, leading them astray and causing them to resort to stealing from their own families. It’s imperative that the government outlines its strategies to tackle this growing problem.”
As reported by The Sentinel, responding to these concerns, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika reassured the assembly, emphasizing the government’s unwavering commitment to addressing this issue head-on. Hazarika asserted, “Online gambling stands prohibited within our state, and the Assam Police are actively cracking down on illegal gambling operations. To bolster our efforts, we’ve established dedicated cybercrime police stations to combat such activities effectively. However, one of the challenges we face is the reluctance of victims to report these crimes. As the number of cases increases, so will police efforts. Public awareness is crucial for effective law enforcement.”
The state government’s proactive stance underscores its determination to safeguard its citizens from the dangers of online gambling. Recognizing the need for collaborative efforts between authorities and the public, the government is urging citizens to report any instances of online gambling to ensure swift and decisive action. Furthermore, efforts are underway to enhance awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public about the risks associated with online gambling and the importance of reporting such activities.
By implementing stringent measures and public awareness, the state government is taking decisive steps to combat the online gambling menace and protect the welfare of its citizens, particularly the youth who are most vulnerable to its allure.
