Hans India reported that, During the operation, 11 individuals were arrested for participating in chicken betting. Law enforcement officials seized two betting chickens, six bikes, Rs. 13,100 in cash, and eight cell phones from the suspects. Cockfighting, a prohibited activity under Sections 11(1) (m) (ji) and (n) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, but it continues despite legal restrictions. Animal rights organization Peta India has been actively advocating for enforcement of the law, urging state police in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to take action against cockfighting.
The Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police had earlier issued directives to unit officers to be vigilant and crack down on such activities during Makar Sankranti when such betting activities are most prevalent, reported TOI earlier this year during the festival.
Cockfighting, a practice deeply rooted in tradition, primarily occurs in January, coinciding with Makar Sankranti. It is prevalent in coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, including Krishna, Guntur, East Godavari, and West Godavari, despite being illegal. Roosters bred for cockfights often have knives and blades tied to their legs, resulting in deadly outcomes for one or both birds during fights.
The history of cockfighting in India dates back centuries, with its origins intertwined with ancient forms of entertainment. However, it has been illegal since the enactment of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act in 1960. Despite legal prohibitions and bans, the practice continues due to its cultural significance and financial incentives. Cockfighting events in Andhra Pradesh have seen huge amounts gambled, indicating the need for continued enforcement efforts to curb this illegal activity and protect animal welfare.
