Popular actor Tamannaah Bhatia has responded to the summons issued by the Maharashtra Cyber Cell. The summon, which required her presence for questioning as a witness, was in connection to her involvement in promoting and endorsing the FairPlay app, a subsidiary of the Mahadev betting app accused of streaming IPL matches illegally.
Earlier this month, Tamannaah Bhatia received a summons from the Maharashtra Cyber Cell regarding her involvement in promoting a subsidiary app of the Mahadev online gaming and betting platform. The summons coincided with accusations of streaming of Indian Premier League (IPL) matches on the FairPlay betting app.
As reported by News 18, Tamannaah, who was asked to appear before the Cyber Cell on April 29, has requested for a later date citing her absence from Mumbai. Despite not issuing a formal statement to the press, sources close to the actress have confirmed her communication with the Cyber Cell.
Last week, Tamannaah’s name surfaced in headlines regarding the IPL streaming case, with the Maharashtra Cyber Cell summoning her for questioning. The case originated from a complaint filed by Viacom18, claiming substantial financial losses due to the illegal streaming of IPL matches on FairPlay, a platform for which Tamannaah endorsed.
The FIR, lodged in September 2023, highlighted the significant loss of over Rs. 100 crore incurred by Viacom18 as a result of the unauthorized streaming, despite the company holding the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) for broadcasting the matches.
Tamannaah’s summon comes in the wake of similar actions taken against other prominent figures, including Sanjay Dutt and Jacqueline Fernandez, who were also called in for questioning. Additionally, reports suggest that more than 20 influencers who endorsed the FairPlay app may soon be summoned to record their statements regarding their involvement.
The investigation into the IPL streaming case has gained momentum since December 2023, following the arrest of an employee associated with the betting app.
