Angamuthu, a rights holder from Chinna Manali in Salem district, reportedly lost a sum of money in online rummy, leading to debt and ultimately, an act of suicide.
The events unfolded following Angamuthu’s involvement in online gambling over the past six months, where he reportedly became attracted by the appeal of easy money. According to close friends and relatives, Angamuthu, burdened by financial losses and debts accrued through his gambling activities, took his own life due to mental suffering.
As reported by Hindu Tamil, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss expressed profound sorrow and called for urgent government intervention to address the escalating crisis of online gambling. “Online gambling turns everyone into slaves,” remarked Angamuthu’s brother, highlighting the urgent need for stringent regulatory measures to curb the rampant spread of online gambling addiction.
The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) has long advocated for a complete ban on online gambling, citing its impact on individuals and families across Tamil Nadu. The recent incident involving Angamuthu has prompted calls for legislative action to safeguard vulnerable individuals from falling prey to the dangers of online gambling.
In response to public concerns over the rise in gambling-related fatalities, the Tamil Nadu government faces pressure to enforce stricter regulations. The PMK and concerned citizens have urged the government to take action, emphasizing that the tragic loss of lives like Angamuthu’s underscores the urgent need for measures to combat online gambling.
The issue has prompted debates about the efficacy of existing laws and the necessity for more enforcement to prevent further incidents. As Tamil Nadu deals with the aftermath of this incident, the High Court is expected to initiate hearings to examine the legal implications and potential amendments to gambling laws.
“Online gambling has claimed far too many lives,” stated Ramadoss, urging the Tamil Nadu government to prioritize the enactment of legislation that regulates and curtails online gambling activities. The PMK remains committed to advocate for policies that protect families from the consequences of gambling addiction.
As the investigation continues into Angamuthu’s tragic death, his family and community mourn the loss of a life affected by online gambling, highlighting the need for measures to safeguard public welfare and prevent future tragedies.
