Australian batting legend David Warner has surprised fans with a U-turn on his retirement. After announcing his international retirement following Australia’s T20 World Cup 2024 exit, Warner has now confirmed his availability for selection in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025.

This definitely comes as a shocker as Australian cricketers rarely come out of retirement. David Warner’s initial retirement announcement came in June 2024. Following the World Cup final loss to India and his final Test against Pakistan, he announced his retirement from ODIs and Tests.

The southpaw continued playing T20Is until his last match for Australia last month during the T20 World Cup 2024. On social media, Warner expressed his gratitude for a remarkable career spanning over 100 international games across formats.
He acknowledged his family and fans for their unwavering support.

However, the plot thickened with Warner leaving the door ajar for a Champions Trophy comeback. He declared his interest in playing if selected, hinting at his desire to contribute in the marquee event.

Here’s what David Warner wrote in his instagram post:

“Chapter closed!! It’s been an unbelievable experience to play at the highest level for such a long period. Australia was my team. The majority of my career was at the international level. It’s been an honour to be able to do this. 100+ games in all formats is my highlight,” wrote David Warner.

“I want to say thanks to everyone out there who has made this possible. My wife and my girls, who sacrificed so much, thank you for all your support. No person will ever know what we’ve been through.

“For all the cricket fans out there, I truly hope I have entertained you and changed cricket, especially tests, in a way where we scored a bit faster than others 😂😂. We cannot do what we love without the fans, so thanks,” he added.

“I will continue to play franchise cricket for a while, and I am also open to playing for Aus in the Champions trophy if selected,” wrote David Warner
