The former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has fired back at those who criticized him for appointing Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Indian cricket team after Virat Kohli stepped down from the role following the 2021 World Cup debacle.

The Indian cricket team recently ended their over-decade-long World Cup trophy drought by defeating South Africa in the Caribbean to claim the T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s leadership.

In an interview with the Bengali daily ‘Aajkaal,’ Sourav Ganguly stated that Team India has won the World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s leadership. He added that people seem to have forgotten that he was the one who appointed Rohit as the captain.

“When I handed Rohit Sharma the captaincy of the Indian team, everyone criticised me. Now that India has won the T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, everyone has stopped abusing me for it. In fact, I think everyone has forgotten that it was I who appointed him as the captain of the Indian team,” Sourav Ganguly told Ajkaal.

Here it is worth mentioning that Rohit Sharma’s selection as the captain of the Indian T20 team led to much tension and criticism, a decision that was made by Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI president at the time.
