Suryakumar Yadav, India’s flamboyant batter, has emerged as the surprise choice to lead the Men in Blue in T20 Internationals, according to news reports.

Following Rohit Sharma’s retirement after India’s T20 World Cup win, the team finds itself without a skipper in the shortest format. The Press Trust of India reports that Suryakumar Yadav has pipped all-rounder Hardik Pandya to succeed Rohit as captain.

This comes as a surprise as the Baroda all-rounder served as Rohit’s deputy during the T20 World Cup. However, reports suggest that new head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar want Suryakumar Yadav for the captaincy role.

Notably, Hardik Pandya’s injury concerns might have played a big role in this decision of the management. On the other hand, Suryakumar Yadav has already impressed as captain in the T20I series against Australia and South Africa.
