The Jaffna Kings secured their fourth Lanka Premier League title in emphatic fashion, thrashing the Galle Marvels by nine wickets in the final at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday, July 21.
Chasing a modest target of 185, the Jaffna Kings made light work of the total thanks to a spectacular opening partnership between Kusal Mendis and Rilee Rossouw.
Mendis continued his fine form from the Qualifier, scoring an unbeaten 72 off 40 balls. However, it was Rossouw who stole the show with a breathtaking century.
Rilee Rossouw’s Slams Match-Winning Century
The South African hammered an unbeaten 106 off just 53 balls, his knock laced with nine fours and seven towering sixes. The Galle bowlers, despite trying six different options, failed to contain the rampant Jaffna batters.
Earlier, Jaffna Kings captain won the toss and elected to bowl first. Their decision proved to be a masterstroke as they rattled the Galle top order, reducing them to 24/3 inside the powerplay.
Just when Galle seemed in deep trouble, Bhanuka Rajapaksa stepped up with a belligerent knock of 82 runs off just 34 balls. The left-hander smashed eight boundaries and as many sixes to revive his side’s innings. Rajapaksa forged crucial partnerships with Tim Seifert and Sahan Arachchige, helping Galle post a respectable total of 184/6 on the board.
Jaffna Kings Becomes Most Successful Team in LPL History
However, the Kings batting firepower proved too much to handle for the Galle bowlers. With a thumping nine-wicket victory, the Jaffna Kings secured their fourth LPL title and cemented their place as the most successful team in the tournament’s history.
