Andrew Flintoff, the ex-allrounder, is reported to be in the running to become England’s new head coach for white-ball formats. Matthew Mott’s job is reportedly in jeopardy after England’s failure to defend their title in last month’s T20 World Cup.

For the second consecutive year, England not only missed out on defending an ICC title but also delivered a subpar performance in the tournament. In 2023, the defending champions had a dismal showing at the ODI World Cup, ending in 7th place out of 10 teams with only 3 victories from 9 matches.

England’s performance in the T20 World Cup last month also fell short of expectations. Despite entering the tournament as one of the favourites, they struggled to find their form and failed to defend their title. They were defeated by Australia, South Africa, and eventual champions India and got eliminated.

Following the underwhelming results in the two World Cups recently, the ECB is said to be evaluating changes to both the head coach and captain roles for white-ball formats. Reports indicate that Jos Buttler’s captaincy, along with Matthew Mott’s coaching role, could be in jeopardy.

Andrew Flintoff is reportedly the leading candidate to succeed Matthew Mott as England’s head coach. Although Rob Key, England’s director of cricket, initially wanted World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan for the role, Morgan has recently stepped back from consideration, making Flintoff the top choice.
