The Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has opened up about the poor treatment that Hardik Pandya received from fans during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.

Hardik Pandya was appointed as the captain of the Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2024, replacing Rohit Sharma, the long-standing captain who led them to five IPL titles.

However, fans who were emotionally connected with Rohit Sharma could not bear this decision. They were unhappy and vented their frustration on Hardik Pandya.

The fans booed Hardik Pandya, no matter which stadium he played in. The situation became so severe that at one point, cricket commentator Sanjay Manjrekar had to intervene and scold the crowd to “behave.”

In an interview with the Indian Express, Jasprit Bumrah revealed that it was not an easy time for Hardik Pandya. It is never easy to ignore such huge voices coming from fans, but the teammates were always with him to help him overcome that.

“Sometimes we understand, we live in a country where emotion is the talking point. We understand fans get emotional. Players are emotional. It does affect you as an Indian player when your fans are not speaking well,” Bumrah said.

Bumrah further revealed that although the fans were initially unhappy with Hardik Pandya, the narrative changed completely after India won the T20 World Cup 2024. Notably, Hardik played a significant role in India’s campaign throughout and was one of the key players behind India’s victory.

“But you have to take it on your chin. It’s not that simple. They are screaming. You can hear it. But then your inner circle helps. We as a team were with him, talking to him. His family will always be there. That narrative also changed when we won the World Cup,” he added.

Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya is going through tough times in his personal life as he recently announced divorce from his wife Natasa. He informed his fans that he and his wife will continue co-parenting their son Agastya.
