Ahead of their ODI series against India, Sri Lanka has been dealt a blow as young fast bowlers Matheesha Pathirana and Dilshan Madushanka have both been sidelined for the entire series with injuries.

While Pathirana is injured with a shoulder problem, Madushanka is sidelined due to a hamstring injury. The team will also be missing Dushmantha Chameera, who is ill, and Nuwan Thushara, who has a fractured thumb.

They have added uncapped right-arm seamer Mohamed Shiraz to the squad. However, they will need another fast bowler to fill the shoes of Dilshan Madushanka. Here’s what Sri Lanka team manager Mahinda Halangoda said:

“Matheesha has jarred his shoulder, and because it is the same issue that he had during the World Cup last year, they have chosen not to risk it,” Halangoda was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Kohli, Rohit Returns for ODI Series

Following a 3-0 whitewash in the T20 series, Sri Lanka will look to bounce back strongly in the ODI series and have much to prove. However, the situation appears challenging for Sri Lanka, especially after losing four fast bowlers.

On the other hand, India is entering the ODI series with their main players back in the lineup, as captain Rohit Sharma returns alongside Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer.

This will mark the first time Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are seen together on the field since winning the T20 World Cup in June 2024. The duo retired from T20 internationals after the tournament, stating their intention to focus on ODI and Test cricket moving forward.
