The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season is still around nine months away, but the buzz has already started, especially with the mega auction scheduled to take place later this year.
For Chennai Super Kings, the biggest question will be whether their former captain MS Dhoni will be available for IPL 2025, particularly considering he was partially unfit during IPL 2024.
Even in IPL 2023, Dhoni played the entire tournament with a partially injured knee. Soon after the end of the tournament, in which CSK claimed their fifth IPL title, Dhoni underwent knee surgery.
He successfully recovered and made a comeback to IPL 2024 as a token of love for his fans. However, he stepped down from captaincy just before the start of the season and handed it over to Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Under Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy, Chennai Super Kings failed to qualify for the playoffs.
MS Dhoni’s Participation in IPL 2025 Depends on Retentions
According to a report, MS Dhoni had a conversation with Chennai Super Kings owner N. Srinivasan, during which he confirmed that his participation in IPL 2025 will depend on the number of retentions the BCCI allows teams.
If the number of retentions is around five or six, Dhoni is likely to play the next season of the IPL. However, if it is fewer, there is uncertainty about his participation in IPL 2025.
MS Dhoni confirmed this during a recent event, stating that he can’t make a decision yet as the BCCI is still to decide on the retention rules. Once they are finalized, he will make a decision in the best interest of the team.
Here is what he said during the event:
“We have to see what decision they take on player retention—right now, the ball is not in our court. Once the rules and regulations are formalized, I will make a call, but it needs to be in the best interest of the team.”
The BCCI held a meeting with IPL owners on July 31, where they discussed the mega auction. The majority of teams, including Chennai Super Kings, are against a concept of mega auction and prefer a mini auction instead.
