Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami had ankle surgery in February, which saw him missing the five-match Test series against England, the IPL, and the recent T20 World Cup 2024.

He is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), focusing on his rehabilitation. Earlier, a BCCI insider suggested that the board was considering Shami for the series against Bangladesh, but this may now be in doubt.

Shami has mentioned that he has not achieved full fitness yet and wants to participate in some domestic games for Bengal before making his return to the national squad.

“It’s difficult to say when I will be back. I am trying hard but hopefully, you will get to see me in Bengal colours before I don the India jersey again. I will come to play two-three matches for Bengal and will come fully prepared for it,” Shami was quoted as saying by Times of India.

‘Never thought injury would be this serious’ – Mohammed Shami

Shami also revealed that he had originally planned to have the surgery after the T20 World Cup, with hopes of participating in both the IPL and the global tournament.

However, his plans changed as his ankle condition deteriorated during the ODI World Cup. Shami admitted that he did not anticipate the injury becoming so severe, and the doctors recommended immediate surgery after the tournament.

“We never thought the injury would be this serious. The plan was to address it after the T20 World Cup since we had the IPL and the ICC T20 mega event coming almost back-to-back after last year’s World Cup. But it turned worse during the ODI World Cup itself and I also did not find it right to risk playing on with it,” he recalled. “Even the doctors could not believe that the injury will take such a serious turn and will take so much time to heal,” the pacer added.
