Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur recently opened up about the unusual and horrible experience team India had to face during their 2020–21 tour of Australia.
India’s 2020–21 tour of Australia was a rollercoaster. After a crushing loss in the first Test, they bounced back with a big win in Melbourne, held on in Sydney, and then pulled off a historic victory at the Gabba.
However, it wasn’t smooth sailing for the visitors. In a recent event, Shardul Thakur, revealed the tough challenge the Indian team had to go through on the Australia tour. Here’s what the Indian all-rounder told IIMS:
“The way they treated us was very horrible. For four or five days there won’t be any housekeeping services in the hotel. You want to change your bed sheets, you would have to walk up the stairs for four or five floors, get the bed sheets. When you’re tired, come change it, do your own things.”
‘A Lot of Negative Tactics Were Used to Pressure Us’ – Shardul Thakur
Additionally, Shardul Thakur shared that the then Indian head coach Ravi Shastri and interim captain Ajinkya Rahane were constantly at odds with Cricket Australia to get things sorted.
“Our coach Ravi Shastri, Virat had left, Ajinkya was leading. They both were in a regular fight with the Cricketing Board of Australia to get the things that we wanted. Yes, it was difficult the whole tour.”
Things went beyond just the cricket field. Shardul Thakur shared that the Queensland Governor commented that if India didn’t want to visit, it was fine. According to Shardul, this was a move to put pressure on them.
“Going from Sydney to Brisbane, we also heard the lady governor of Queensland saying if the Indians don’t want to come here, don’t come, we don’t want to host them. There were a lot of negative things being said about us to put us under pressure,” Thakur added.
