England’s Test captain, Ben Stokes, may miss the upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka due to a suspected hamstring injury sustained during a match in The Hundred on Sunday.
According to the ICC, Stokes injured himself while trying to take a quick single for the Northern Superchargers against the Manchester Originals in The Hundred at Old Trafford. Later, he left the field in pain.
Stokes was also seen using crutches but then returned to the team dugout to witness the Superchargers’ narrow seven-wicket triumph over their northern competitors. He will now undergo scans on Monday to assess the injury.
Ollie Pope to Lead England
If Stokes is ruled out of the first Test against Sri Lanka, vice-captain Ollie Pope could step up to lead England. The team will be looking to capitalize on home advantage to secure important points towards qualifying for the ICC World Test Championship final next year.
